Kano Kokichi
Kano Kokichi / 1865-1942 / Education・Anthropology
After graduating from Imperial University (now Tokyo University), Kano began teaching at Dai-yon Junior High School in Kanazawa Prefecture. Later, he moved to Kumamoto where at the age 34 he became the principal of Dai-ichi High School.
In 1906 he became the first dean of the Humanities College at Kyoto University and brought many of the leading scholars of the time into the faculty.
In 1899 Kano found a copy of Ando Shoeki’s text Right Cultivation which he began to study. In 1908 academic journal, he published the article “A Great Thinker” which introduced Ando’s writings to a larger audience. In 1928, he gave an influential lecture detailing Ando’s philosophy.
Good friends with the novelist Natsumi Soseki, it is said he served as the inspiration for Mr. Sneeze in his book I Am a Cat.
