Born to a farming family in the Kawaguchi area in Odate City. At four year’s old the family moved to Otaru City in Hokkaido where Kobayashi worked in his grandfather’s bakery. In 1924 he graduated from Otaru High School and began working at Hokkaido Takushoku Bank.
Kobayashi published March 15, 1928 based on the large scale crackdown of socialists and communists in Hokkaido and gained notoriety as a writer.
In 1929 Kobayashi published The Crab Cannery Ship and was subsequently fired from the bank for his left-wing views. The next year he moved to Tokyo where he was part of an influential circle of writers, but had to go underground due to mounting political pressure. In 1933 he was arrested by the Special Higher Police for his views and died during his subsequent torture at Tsukiji Police Headquarters.
