Odate Bayashi Music

Odate Bayashi Music (Folk Entertainment)

The traditional Odate Bayashi Music that accompanies the local festival has its roots in music from Kyoto.

There are two theories of how the Kyoto music style came to Odate. The first proposes that Lord Satake on his way to Akita from modern-day Ibaraki Prefecture used the music he made his way north and was then passed down through his successors. Another proposes that a powerful figure from Odate may have learned the music in their youth in Kyoto.

A diary entry from 1889 mentions a performance of the music at the Shinmeisha Festival and that tradition has continued every year to the modern day.
